Sonja Lanehart, PhD

Writing Community Facilitator

I am Professor of Linguistics and Education and Affiliate Faculty in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching at the University of Arizona

I came to the University of Arizona in Fall 2019 after having been a Professor and the Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities for 13 years at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (BA) and the University of Michigan (MA & PhD) and a Mellon and Ford Foundation Fellow. In addition to being an accomplished scholar and teacher, I have created various mentoring communities around Black and Emerging Scholars of Color, have led many formal mentoring programs, and am the lead facilitator of WOW—the Wednesday co-write sessions in WellAcademic’s Focus Fridays writing community.

As a Black woman from the South who grew up in a working-class family and community, I am keenly connected to where I came from and how I got there.
